Executive Protection and Travel Risk: Planning the Journey, Not Just the Meeting

Most executive risk sits in transit. A structured journey management plan removes improvisation from the most exposed part of any itinerary.

When we review incidents involving senior executives and visiting dignitaries, the venue is rarely the problem. Exposure concentrates in movement: arrival at an airport, a stalled vehicle in dense traffic, an unplanned stop, a predictable daily route between residence and office.

Journey management begins with route study. Our advance teams drive primary and alternate routes at the same time of day as the planned movement, recording choke points, hospitals, police posts, safe havens and mobile coverage gaps.

Vehicle and driver selection follow. Protective drivers are trained in defensive manoeuvres, embus and debus procedures, and convoy discipline. Communications are tested end to end before the principal moves, never during.

Discretion shapes every decision. Effective close protection should be invisible to observers and unobtrusive to the principal, which means low-profile vehicles, plain business attire where appropriate, and detail sizing that matches the actual threat picture rather than theatre.

Finally, every movement is debriefed. What ran late, what surprised the team, what should change tomorrow. That short discipline is what turns a single successful trip into a repeatable standard.
